Reflection For The Week

In Luke 17: 1-4, Jesus warns his disciples against causing one of the "the little ones" to stumble. Jesus says that causing someone to stumble is worse than drowning to death. Since Jesus, in Luke, often sets the discipleship bar very high, it is not surprising that the disciples feel the need for a greater measure of faith.

So, in17: 5-6, there is a quick interaction about this request. Considering how difficult Jesus makes it to be a disciple, it is no wonder that the disciples ask for greater faith. Having heard what Jesus expects of those who want to follow him, and now hearing Jesus issue such a stern warning, the disciples know they need help.

Jesus tells them they don’t need much faith– only a mustard- seed size is necessary. In the second interchange, 17: 7– 10, Jesus tells the disciples that being a disciple has little to do with the amount of faith one has. It is actually about being a faithful servant.
