Pew Leaflet Sunday 5 November 2017

The spirituality of the Pharisees was a spirituality of the status quo. They spoke about titles, positions, places of honour, ranking, privileges, a rigid hierarchy. Jesus was against this whole hierarchical system, against the status quo. So Jesus, being a rabbi, was asking the prostitutes, tax collectors and sinners to be part of his inner circle. That’s how he went against the social system, challenged the status quo. So the point is that every time you challenge the status quo, you will have opponents and adversaries. And that is the choice before each one of us as well. (Gospel confronts Life; John De Mello)
